Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched the final anti-polio campaign of 2024 on Sunday, aiming to eradicate the virus amid a worrying surge in cases. Scheduled from December 16 to 22, the campaign will cover 143 districts and target over 44 million children to ensure maximum immunization coverage.
With 63 polio cases reported this year, 41% of which emerged from Balochistan, Pakistan remains one of the last two countries where polio is endemic. The virus, primarily affecting children under five, often leads to lifelong paralysis, making eradication a critical public health priority.
Despite persistent challenges, including security concerns, vaccine hesitancy, and misinformation, the government remains resolute. Supported by international partners like the Bill Gates Foundation, WHO, and the Government of Saudi Arabia, efforts are underway to overcome these barriers.
Prime Minister Shehbaz personally administered polio drops at the campaign's launch, urging parents to ensure their children are vaccinated. In Balochistan, where cases are disproportionately high, a special seven-day campaign will commence on December 17, targeting over 2.66 million children. Local officials have emphasized community cooperation, calling on civil society, teachers, and religious leaders to support the initiative and raise awareness.
