The flight, operating as J2-8243, was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, the capital of Russia's Chechnya. Due to dense fog in Grozny, the plane was rerouted and forced to make an emergency landing approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from Aktau.
Unverified video footage of the crash showed the aircraft bursting into flames on impact, with thick black smoke rising into the sky. Emergency services extinguished the fire soon after, according to Kazakhstan’s emergencies ministry.
Investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the crash, with authorities considering technical issues as a potential factor, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency.
