Iran Condemns Israel’s Admission of Killing Hamas Leader Haniyeh, Calls It a ‘Heinous Crime’

Tehran, Iran: Iran has strongly condemned Israel's recent admission of responsibility for the assassination of former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this year, branding it a “brazen admission” of a “heinous terrorist act.”

In a letter to the UN Secretary-General, Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani criticized Israel’s acknowledgment of the killing, stating, “This marks the first time the Israeli regime has openly confessed to its responsibility for this heinous crime.”

Haniyeh, known for his role in negotiating ceasefires in Gaza, was killed on July 31 in Tehran by an explosive device allegedly planted weeks prior by Israeli operatives. While Iran and Hamas had previously blamed Israel for the killing, Israel only confirmed its involvement on Monday, through Defense Minister Israel Katz’s statement.

Iran defended its missile response in October, in which it launched 200 missiles targeting Israel, calling it a “legitimate and justified defensive measure.” Ambassador Iravani stated, “This confession reaffirms the legitimacy of Iran’s defensive response on October 1, 2024, and highlights Israel as a persistent threat to regional and international peace.”

The admission adds further tension to an already volatile region, with escalating violence following the assassination of other key figures such as Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut and Haniyeh’s successor Yahya Sinwar in Gaza.
