The 2024 Global Report on Trafficking in Persons by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reveals a disturbing 25% rise in human trafficking cases between 2019 and 2022 across 156 countries. The report highlights an alarming increase in child exploitation and forced labor, driven by vulnerabilities such as poverty, conflict, and the climate crisis.

Key findings include a 47% increase in victims trafficked for forced labor, with online scams and cyber fraud emerging as notable trends. Women and girls remain the most at-risk group, accounting for 61% of detected victims, with 60% trafficked for sexual exploitation. For boys, 45% are trafficked for forced labor, and others are exploited in criminal activities like begging.

Africa faces heightened vulnerability, with a surge in child trafficking cases linked to displacement and insecurity. Ghada Waly, UNODC Executive Director, calls for stronger criminal justice systems, cross-border cooperation, and comprehensive survivor support to combat these trends.

Key Highlights:

  • Global Trends: Human trafficking cases increased by 25% between 2019 and 2022.
  • Child Exploitation: 31% rise in child victims, particularly girls, trafficked for sexual exploitation.
  • Forced Labor: Victims trafficked for forced labor rose by 47%, with online scams emerging.
  • Regional Focus: Africa sees the highest number of detected trafficking cases, often within the continent.
